There's mercury in the high fructose corn syrup. You know, that "natural" sweetener that's in just about every package on the shelf at the grocery store.
Want more information? This is a serious issue, affecting lots of name brands (Quaker and Coca-Cola, anyone?) and nearly half of the commercial high fructose corn syrup produced.
Read more here, at The Ethicurean or here, at the IATP health observatory.
Anybody hyperventilating yet? I sure am not pleased at this development, which was brought to the FDA's attention four years ago.

Thanks for the info. I do have to say that after reading it, it doesn't really make me nervous or upset or anything. I mean--we're all about moderation in all things and a lot of fish has mercury in it (which is why you shouldn't eat much when you're pregnant--except that some benefits of eating some fish outweigh the potential mercury harms and many doctors and pregnancy books I've read are talking about moderation of eating fish). And I LOVE fish. So...am I going to stop eating fish--even though it really has some great health benefits? No--but I will curb it when I'm pregnant because I don't want the potential increase of mercury with a growing baby. So I limit it. I moderate.
I think it goes for high fructose corn syrup as well. Yeah, it's not great for you--especially if you're eating it all the time and in everything you eat. It's all about moderation and the levels sited in the article are low--really low (when compared to mercury levels in our natural environment).
So I'm grateful for the info, (helps me look at food labels more and make sure I'm more moderate in the foods I'm eating) but I'm not going to loose any sleep over it. I've got enough to worry about :)
Thanks for the info :)
Yeah, I'm with Amy. Yes, I try to eat healthy and natural anyway, and I believe that the less processed things are the better they are for me.
Take that, corn refiners association..."nutritionally the same as sugar, and fine in moderation" maybe we should add, as long as it's not contaminated with dangerous elements. Overprocessing anything isn't optimal. I don't usually stress about such things (there are pesticide residues in everything else, probably), but come on, manufacturers. Really. Anyone know if this is going to lead to a mass recall? (Or maybe I should follow those links and learn more.) Thanks for the heads up, Em.
do you just hate all those new commercials about it?? UGH! Drives me nuts! I miss your no-nonsense conversations on health and kids. We're praying for Josh and for you and your little guys. Love ya!
