Read, Read, Read

I had a long-distance friend e-mail me and ask me what I was reading, and I thought that my other friends might be interested in the list. Most of my playground conversations revolve around what I've been reading lately, and I miss chatting with all of you girls about what's going on in my books!

An incomplete list of what I've read this year:

Jesus the Christ Talmadge
The Promise of Discipleship Maxwell
The Man Watching (a biography of Anson Dorrance, coach of UNC women's soccer)
The Well-Trained Mind Bauer, Wise
The Well-Educated Mind Bauer, Wise
Nurture Shock Bronson, Merryman
How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life Lakein
Romancing Miss Bronte Gael
Foundation Asimov
The Bicentennial Man and Other Stories Asimov
1632 Flint
Dragonsdawn McCaffrey
Tintin (several comic books) Herge
Pilgrim's Progress Bunyan
The Ladies of Missalonghi McCullough, Colleen (I read this at least twice a year)

And the books I have out from the library right now:
At Home in Mitford Karon
The Soprano Sorceress Modesitt
Le Petit Prince Saint-Exupery
Mornings on Horseback (biography of T. Roosevelt) McCullough, David

And this is just off the top of my head! I really love reading and learning, obviously, and I've started taking notes to retain more of what I read. If you want to learn to read critically, The Well-Educated Mind is a great guide to giving yourself more of a classical education.

What are you all reading these days? Any great recommendations? I'm debating checking out the Hunger Games, but I've heard the end of the trilogy is rather depressing. Thoughts?

I loved, loved, loved the hunger games series (but my genre that I love is really young adult/teen). I think the first book seems kind of "teenish" and the second one is a little more young adult and then the last one is really in depth thinking...but to tell you the truth, I loved the first 300 pages (of the last one), not such a fan of the last 50, but I liked the last 2...so there you go.

As far as what I'm reading...some sisters in my ward are starting up a book club and the book is Three Cups of Tea, so that's what I'm planning to read now.

I'm waiting on hunger games. I just can't mentally do a "I have to see how this ends!" series right now.
Right now I'm reading Joseph Smith: rough stone rolling and really liking it. It's thick though. Not like Dickens, just lots of info. I've heard it gets harder when polygamy comes up, but since I'm pro polygamy I shouldn't have an issue with it (I seriously NEED a sister wife).
I also just read about 3 books on gifted children which helped me realize mine isn't. He's just very smart. :)

I just read "My Sister's Keeper" - I haven't seen the movie, but the book was good. There's a lot of strong language, which I have found (disappointingly) is pretty common in "adult" fiction :-(

So I went back to Juvenile fiction :) I just read The Giver, and I plan to read all the Newberry Award winners in the next 12 months (even the ones I have read before - because chances are I read them in elementary school or junior high, and I think they are worth re-reading).

I was going to check out the Hunger Games, but there were no available copies at the library here, and we're only here for a few more weeks, so I didn't bother putting a hold on it. I'll look it up when we get back to UT.

In nonfiction, I've read In Defense of Food and I checked out Nurture Shock, but it was a 14 day loan, and I had other books I was reading, so I completely forgot about it.

I've also been reading Rough Stone Rolling. My religion prof. from BYU helped with some of the research and recommended it to me back when I was still in school.

We should start a "long distance" book club :)

I liked the Hunger Games. It was worth reading and fun. I just read the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Enchantment, The Help, Peace Like a River, and I can't remember what else right now. I liked all of those, but they're just fun books, nothing serious.
