My Relief Society president sent me this today. Something to think about.
"If any one faculty of our nature may be called more wonderful than
the rest, I do think it is memory. There seems something more
speakingly incomprehensible in the powers, the failures, the
inequalities of memory, than in any other of our intelligences. The
memory is sometimes so retentive, so serviceable, so obedient; at
others, so bewildered and so weak; and at others again, so tyrannic,
so beyond control! We are, to be sure, a miracle every way; but our
powers of recollecting and of forgetting do seem peculiarly past
finding out."
Jane Austen, Mansfield Park
The prophets have told us time and again to keep a record. Heavenly Father has been saying it for centuries.
So what will you do? Make a decision! Stick to it! Write in a journal, or write letters to family and photocopy them to save, or blog regularly and keep a backup. Keep photo albums. Just choose, and keep at it!
As for me, I'm going to start writing letters weekly to family members, and saving photocopies for my kids. If I don't feel like writing to family, I'll write directly to my sons, and save them for the future.

I started a blog (mostly for my personal benefit) of letters to my children. I wrote Vince a letter when I was pregnant with him. I was so enamored with the thought of my body creating a body, and I wrote about it. I hope to share it (and the other letters ) with him some day.
I've been trying to be more vigilant about keeping my journal, my blog, and just had the idea to ask my siblings/parents to write memories of me for my personal history. When I was with my family this summer I realized that I had forgotten a LOT of things about my childhood, and talking with my family brought a lot of them back.
My mom wrote letters to my grandparents every week. Then as kids we did it too (cause we liked my mom doing it). She now has binders filled with all of her weekly letters. It was a great way to keep in touch (no email/internet) and also a great record for us now.
I also do a yearly "letter" for my kids (well just Olivia, but I plan to do it for all) where I just recap my thoughts in different areas of their life for the year. Jeremy writes one too (at least that's the goal...though it is a bit shorter than mine :) ). My parents did that and then compiled it into a book and gave it to us when we left for college. So special!
I think you've got some great thoughts!
